Kannapolis’ name is attributed to James William Cannon who founded Cannon Mills Kannapolis in 1905. Kannapolis became a thriving mill town and many of the current residents claim mill heritage.
In 1941 noted filmmaker H. Lee Waters made a silent film about Kannapolis showing this quiet community as the epitome of small town living and values. This film was selected in 2004 by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Film Registry as representative of the 1930s and 1940s small town portrait movement in filmmaking.
In 1984 Kannapolis was the largest unincorporated town in the U.S. That year they voted to incorporate and became the 16th largest city in North Carolina. In that same year the council began a series of economic initiatives to maintain the growth of this thriving community.

There is also the Curb Museum for Music and Motorsports. Music mogul, Mike Curb is the museum’s owner and it combines two of his passions, music and racing. Lining the walls are photos of music greats mixed with racing stars, while all over the spacious museum floor are racing cars some of them owned and driven at one time or another by Mike Curb, and originally driven by racing names like Dale Earnhart, Richard Petty, and Dale Jarret. According to the museum manager, this was a hands-on project by Mike Curb and his wife and who helped arrange the museum displays.
