Cornelius Real Estate and Homes - History

Before the city of Cornelius was founded, some of the areas in and around Mecklenburg County were heavily influenced by the textile industry.  Much of the business in the area had to do with the farming and milling of raw materials such as cotton.  The territory of what is now Cornelius became a small business area for cotton farmers and purchasers.  As the town continued to grow, businessmen began to plan to build a cotton mill, which would greatly increase productivity and profits by converting raw cotton into textile cloths.

Without enough money to build the mill, businessmen sought financial aid. The main contributor for the construction funding was J.B. Cornelius.  When the mill started running, business and development began to pick up and the town was later incorporated as “Liverpool,” but the name was changed to Cornelius for his contributions to the community.

Another crucial step towards the development of Cornelius was the building of the man-made Lake Norman.  When the Catawba River was dammed in 1963, Lake Norman was created.  Lake Norman had three major effects on the area in and around it, including Cornelius:

1. Increased the value of the land around it, effectively creating lakeside properties to improve Cornelius property values

2. Provided a place for recreation for those who lived in the area

3. Served as a source of hydroelectric power

Throughout the years, Cornelius has become a beautiful city with an active business sector and increased development in Cornelius.
